As the intense heat of High Summer ebbs away, so our thoughts turn to enjoying an Indian Summer and relaxing afternoons with the warmth of the sun on our face. This same mood can be brought indoors and enjoyed all year round.
My favourite collection of fabrics & wallpapers to set this sensuous mood is the Kallianthi collection designed by Clarissa Hulse for Harlequin. The colours are striking & the assorted textures are crying out to be touched.
An Indian Summer interior will have a glamorous yet chilled vibe. Colour is key to this look, gold in particular as well as vibrant jewel colours. Simple touches such as coloured glass and mirrored surfaces will emphasise the glamour whilst distressed furniture enhances this moody style.
The curtains in this picture are made from ‘Persephone’ a cotton & silk mix and for a more muted option the fabric is reversible. The cushions are made using an array of the coloured Kallianthi fabrics. The armchairs in the foreground have been upholstered in ‘Potentilla’ – notice how the coloured leaves stand out from the background. The sofa in the back ground is covered with Harlequin’s Boutique Velvet in the softest Mushroom and the lampshade uses ‘Grasses’ a crisp vivid silk. Together these colours & textures create a heady delight to the senses.
These rich & intense tones of red & gold conjure thoughts of heavily scented summer evenings, you can almost smell the fragrant incense and sandalwood. The curtains are made from ‘Grasses’ a striking silk and the perfect backdrop for the ‘Olea’ covered Chaise Longue. The ‘Demeter Stripe’ cushion provides a glorious contrast to the richness of the furniture.
Here, four of the five luscious colours of ‘Persephone’ look tantalising, displayed inside these Indian style booths. Together the fabrics create an intoxicating symphony of colour but when used individually can be equally as powerful.
These dazzling cushions are made up of a mix of fabrics from the provocative Kallianthi collection, including silks, linens & cottons. Cushions are a great way of injecting colour & setting the scene without breaking the bank. If you want to create a different mood for each season then simply remove the covers, say at Christmas time & replace with something seasonal. The cushion covers take up little space & can be popped into a drawer until next year.
